Rice hulls are needed when brewing with sticky grains like oat, rye, or wheat - essentially, any huskless grain with a lot of gluten. Not adding rice hulls to a grain bill with a high percentage of these types of grains will result in your mash becoming a big clump o' sticky mess, and that means wasted time and money. Note: We define "high percentage" as anything over 30%. Rice hulls are flavorless, colorless, and add no fermentable sugar.
