Hops With a Home. Spalt, Bavaria.
From Spalt to Fort Worth
Spalt, Bavaria is one of the oldest documented hop-growing regions in the world, and the only region whose signature hop — Spalt Spalter — carries protected-origin status (g.U.). Since 1953, the region’s growers have been organized under the HVG Spalt cooperative, with Spalter Hopfen GmbH as its trading arm.
Pro Brew Supply works directly with Spalter Hopfen. We’ve walked the region, visited their facility in Spalt, and hosted Spalter Hopfen’s Managing Director, Dr.-Ing. Frank Braun, at our warehouse in Fort Worth. When you order Spalter hops from us, they travel one route: from Spalt-area growers to our Fort Worth and Atlanta warehouses to your brew deck — cold-stored and lot-documented the whole way.

What crop year are these hops?
Crop year appears in every product title, and exact alpha, beta, and oil values for the active lot are on the COA. We rotate stock by crop year and never blend crop years within a listing.
Can I get German-grown Saaz?
Yes — and it's one of the more unusual offerings in the program: Saaz grown in the Spalt region of Bavaria. Classic fine, spicy Saazer character from German soil. Contact us to order.
What makes Spalter Hopfen different from other German hop suppliers?
Spalter Hopfen is tied to the Spalt hop-growing region in Bavaria, one of Germany’s historic hop areas. The company represents a direct connection to Spalt growers through HVG Spalt and supplies hops from HVG Spalt member farms as well as other growing regions. For brewers, that makes Spalter Hopfen especially valuable when a beer program needs traditional German hop character with traceable sourcing and professional support.
What does “Spalt Spalter g.U.” mean?
Spalt Spalter g.U. refers to a protected-origin Spalt hop designation. For brewers, the important point is that Spalt Spalter is not just a generic hop name. It is connected to a defined growing region and a protected origin system, which helps preserve the identity and reputation of this historic German hop.
Are Spalter Hopfen products only aroma hops?
No. Spalter Hopfen lists both aroma hops and bittering hops in its variety program. That makes the line useful for more than just late kettle aroma. Brewers can use the portfolio to build clean bitterness, refined aroma, or flexible hop programs depending on the variety.
Which Spalter Hopfen varieties are better suited for bittering?
For bittering-focused applications, look at varieties such as Herkules, Merkur, Magnum, Taurus, Nugget, and Northern Brewer when available. These hops are better suited to recipes where the goal is clean structure, efficient bitterness, and production consistency rather than delicate late-hop aroma.
Why does storage matter so much for Spalter Hopfen?
Hop aroma is fragile, and Spalter Hopfen specifically emphasizes gentle, professional storage to preserve the unique aroma of its hops. For brewers, that means cold storage, sealed packaging, and lot-aware purchasing are not just logistics details. They directly affect how the hop performs in the finished beer.
