The Partnership

We Know This Maltings Firsthand

Pro Brew Supply has been visiting French & Jupps in Stanstead Abbotts since 2024 — walking the floor, standing at the roasting drums, and packing co-branded bags for American brewers. And the road runs both ways: F&J leadership has toured our Fort Worth warehouse. When we answer a question about these malts, it comes from having been there.

French & Jupps Malt Buying Guide and FAQs

What happened to William Crisp malt?

William Crisp was the private-label name BSG used for over 30 years to distribute French & Jupps roasted and crystal malts in the US. That partnership ended in 2024. The same malts, from the same English maltings, are now sold under the French & Jupps name — available in the US exclusively through Pro Brew Supply.

Is French & Jupps malt the same as William Crisp malt?

Yes. William Crisp malts were always produced by French & Jupps in Stanstead Abbotts, England. Only the label and US distributor changed — the maltings, recipes, and roasting are the same.

Is William Crisp the same as Crisp Malt?

No. William Crisp was a US brand name for French & Jupps malts. Crisp Malt (Crisp Malting Group) is a separate British maltster. If your recipe called for William Crisp, the match is French & Jupps.

I have a recipe that uses William Crisp — what do I order?

Order the French & Jupps malt of the same name — William Crisp Pale Chocolate is now French & Jupps Pale Chocolate, and so on. Contact Pro Brew Supply if you need help matching a specific malt.

How do I choose the right French & Jupps malt?

Start with the role the malt needs to play. Crystal malts add sweetness, color, and body. Roasted malts add chocolate, coffee, dark color, dryness, and depth. Amber and brown-style malts can add biscuit, toast, and classic British malt character.

Is French & Jupps for British-style beers only?

No. French & Jupps malts shine in classic British styles, but they work across the board — bitters, pale ales, IPAs, milds, brown ales, porters, stouts, dark ales, and any malt-forward recipe where roasted character, color, and depth matter.

Where are French & Jupps malts made?

French & Jupps malts are produced in Stanstead Abbotts, Hertfordshire, England. Their operation is closely tied to British malting heritage and locally sourced barley.

What types of French & Jupps malt does Pro Brew Supply carry?

Pro Brew Supply carries French & Jupps malt options focused on specialty roasted malts, crystal malts, and character malts for commercial brewers.

A Familiar Malt. Its Original Name.

Formerly Known as William Crisp in the U.S.

For more than 30 years, French & Jupps malts were sold to American brewers under the William Crisp label through BSG. That distribution partnership ended in 2024, and these traditional British malts—produced at the historic French & Jupps maltings in Stanstead Abbotts, England—are now available under the French & Jupps name through Pro Brew Supply.

Brewers familiar with William Crisp can select the corresponding French & Jupps malt with confidence: it is the same malt, made at the same maltings, and now presented under its original producer’s name.

A note on the name: William Crisp is not associated with Crisp Malt or Crisp Malting Group, which is a separate British maltster.
